SANTA FE, NM (KRQE) – The New Mexico Department of Tourism is taking a fresh approach to helping small businesses struggling with the pandemic by getting into a box – and they’re targeting your holiday shopping list. They sponsor a Comprehensive Holiday Gift Guide, made up of New Mexico True Certified businesses – and their products – to encourage residents to buy local this season.
“It gives them the opportunity to kind of connect their brand to the New Mexico True brand. The businesses that qualify for and join this program are the types of businesses and products that we bring to opportunities like this, ”said Cody Johnson, of the New Mexico Department of Tourism.
While the tourism department publishes gift guides most years, this is the first year that they’ve made a gift box. The department says it chose a variety of different local businesses and products for the box, including everything from treats to ornaments. Since this is their first time doing a box, they started with a limited inventory of 50 and only a handful are left.
“Business leaders and local leaders kind of insisted and encouraged to buy and support the locals. It’s something we all want to do innately, ”Johnson said. “They want to support local businesses. It’s even better when there’s a lot of stuff packed together because you can support a lot of businesses at once.
The entire True New Mexico Holiday Gift Guide sends many customers to us and we are so grateful to them for creating such an impressive database where people across the country can find products made in Canada. New Mexico, ”said Jacquelene McHorse, co-owner of Bison Star Naturals. “We are truly grateful to all of our locals who support small businesses and keep small businesses strong during these difficult times.”
The “local boutique” department’s holiday guide goes beyond the simple gift box. He suggests specific products from each company – from the more expensive like handcrafted jewelry to affordable options like salsas and jams.
The tourism department says that with the success they have had so far with the vacation box, they hope to create more that can be showcased throughout the year. The gift guide is available through the New Mexico True Vacation Page. Boxes available are $ 95 each and can be purchased online.
