The Fruitmarket Gallery has launched a unique gift registry to help close their redevelopment funding gap that has been strained by the coronavirus pandemic.
The Fruitmarket Gallery has been a key part of Edinburgh’s cultural landscape since 1974. Currently closed for redevelopment, it is preparing for OPEN – with more space for art; a new space for inter-artistic collaborations; better facilities for all; and a new learning studio. The new Fruitmarket was originally scheduled to open in summer 2020, but the coronavirus crisis has seriously challenged the project’s schedule and finances.
They have already raised almost 90% of their £ 3.9million target, but are now launching a public campaign to help close the final gap and ensure the Fruitmarket can continue to operate at the forefront of the market. contemporary culture for decades to come.
The Fruitmarket is asking the public to participate in building a new future for the Fruitmarket and has just launched a GIFT REGISTER where anyone who has taken something away from their own Fruitmarket experience can select a virtual gift that they would like to return.
With the GIFT REGISTER, people can donate to the OPEN OUT campaign by selecting a virtual gift they would like to give back – whether it’s a pair of coat hooks for brand new learning studios. from the gallery; a shelf to display handpicked titles from the ever popular bookstore; redesigned non-gendered and accessible toilets; or even a newly commissioned public artwork created in and for the revived building.
The Fruitmarket Gallery embarked on a transformation plan to modernize its existing building – meeting expectations and revitalizing relationships with 21st century art, artists and audiences – and seized the unique opportunity to take over a building neighbor. , bringing it to cultural use.
OPEN OUT will provide enriched material finishes, improved environmental conditions and modernized public access; all of this will significantly improve their current premises, strengthening their ability to work with artists and collections.
They will continue to program the Fruitmarket exhibition galleries with three world-class exhibitions per year, a mix of solo and group exhibitions, with a diverse selection of artists representing the best of the art of our time.
Next door, a new double-height Fruitmarket warehouse will provide an expansive and inspiring space where artists can create new work in and for the Fruitmarket, creating a regular schedule of in-house organized Fruitmarket orders. This space will also provide us with new opportunities to work in partnership with other cultural organizations, creating a year-round multi-arts venue in the heart of Edinburgh that lends itself to theatrical and musical performances, spoken word and events. from dancing as much as it does to presenting visual art.

OPEN OUT creates new spaces and facilities for engagement and renovates existing spaces, ensuring that they can continue to function at the forefront of contemporary culture for decades to come.
It also gives new capacity and space to maintain and increase the frequency of visitation of current audiences as well as to attract new visitors, proactively targeting under-represented and marginalized groups. This will ensure that their spaces are fully accessible, encompassing all visitors and removing physical and psychological barriers.
