From CFO to Gift Box Entrepreneur, How This Woman Achieves Her Goals

Statistics tell us that women have been hit hardest by this recession. Women have been hit hard by the recent economic downturn, more so than men. The Washington Post stated that “The Covid-19 recession is the most uneven in modern U.S. history.

With these difficult facts, it is predicted that more women will likely venture into the world of entrepreneurship, which offers more flexibility than any workplace.

Do you think you can’t go it alone and start a new business? Think again. Sondra Diggs, Founder and CEO of GlitterMeThisCo, which sells gift boxes under the Girlfriend Therapy in a Box name, has made the transition from CFO boardroom to entrepreneur and loves every minute of it. And so can you, no matter where you are in life.

This year hasn’t made it easy to start a new business, but Sondra has persevered, even in the toughest days. Sondra chooses to take on the challenges of entrepreneurship and enjoy the journey.

Sondra offers these tips to help you in your entrepreneurial success:

1. Know your business numbers

Sondra is a highly qualified Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) and encourages all business owners to know their numbers. You can’t run a successful business without knowing your numbers. You need to know your profit margins, whether your business is making a profit or loss, your operating costs, and understand the financials so you can make the best possible decisions for your business. You need to invest time in learning your numbers and building strong financial systems for your business.

2. Use your skills

Capitalize on the skills you have. Everyone brings skills and strengths to the table, so be sure to use your own. And if you need help, don’t be afraid to ask for it. You can’t be expected to know everything about being a business owner. We all start out as beginners, and it is through experience that we learn and grow.

3. Learn new skills

Don’t be afraid to try new things. Social media can help you boost your business, so don’t be afraid to use it. Sondra has learned to embrace technology and engages with clients through her Girlfriend Therapy community. Marketing is a must for any business so that you can generate as many sales as possible.

4. Don’t be afraid to pivot

Something is not working? Are your marketing efforts not paying off? Don’t be afraid to adjust, rotate, and try new things. If it didn’t work the first time around, maybe a small part needs to be changed. Or try a different approach. Just because something isn’t working doesn’t mean it’s a failure. You need to rotate and adjust your message.

5. Consistency

Systematically introduce yourself to your customers. Let them know you are there for them. Develop a relationship with them. Business is about building relationships with others, and we need each other to learn and grow. Introduce yourself to people and let them hear your message and what you are offering.

6. Love and appreciate your girlfriends

Sondra’s business relies on the community of girlfriends and women who support women, and it shows. Not only is Sondra selling a product that promotes her girlfriends, but she’s also building a community around that very idea.

The bottom line is, it hasn’t been the easiest year for business, but it is manageable. Starting a new business can be scary, but fear is not a fan of action, so the fear tends to dissipate when you take action.
